2. I actually had, had had and  am still having only one problem with Brazilians. The way they address you when they call you on the phone. The ubiquitous phrase "Quem fala?" when said by someone who calls YOU is just out of norm anywhere in the educated world. I hang up on such calls. if they don´t know whom they are calling to, I have no obligation to talk to them.

3. To the newcomers I would advise to remember that any agreement in Brazil is not a final point, but rather a starting point from which whatever you´ve agreed upon has to be closely accompanied. No matter if it is furniture delivery or business contract. If you fold your
arms and just wait for the things to happen, they won´t happen, because Brazilians are interactive people, and lack of constant feedback from you will be considered as a lack of interest in the matter.

4. i´ve lived in many countries before and speak several languages, including Spanish. So I didn´t have to look for any international community. I simply blended into daily Brazilain life.

5. The question is too vague to be answerde. You should have defined first what do you mean by personal growth.

Umberto from Italy ,living in Bahia since two years.
Lack of privacy ( everybody is very kind ,but sometimes they invite themself into your house and you do not know nothingh about this.)Interferences very often for your way of leaving,they are sometimes intruders.
Way of driving the cars is still on the stone age,there is a lots of work to do.
Lack of reading-culture,nobody read anythingh,never ,even if they have to wait for hours ,nobody buy a newspaper.Means as well lack of culture exchange,there are too many shoping centers.People are completly into materials era.

If somebody come to live in Brazil I would sugest not to trust the first coming person and have a lots of time to wait for everythingh ,unless you leave in Sao Paulo .
The International comunity in Bahia does not existe or it´s a very low unknow level.
However I do not want to look for the International comunity because it´´s more interesting to live the " Brazil " of the Brazilians people.

Brazil make me feel every morning very happy and to take the life more easy.
However,this life may be not be the best for every one who comes to Brazil.You have to became a bit like me ,problems less.
I feel very look after and people are more honest than Europe .

2. Humm, 3 most difficult? Well, the way things here take so long to accomplish, lol. Bank accounts, paperwork.
No hot water, taken for granted in the USA, sometimes I miss it. And, the bars. So much different from NY, where they are all enclosed, here, all wide open, casual.
3. I would tell newcomers, what they should bring, what documents and papers are necessary, what to expect from the customs here.
Definitely describe the weather, especially if they come from a northern, cold climate.
4. I have met very few Americans, or other nationalities here, I am just beginning to find sites like this. I have been here since Oct 2009, although I have visited before.
%. I really enjoy the experience here. I came to Brazil because I fell in love, and now I am married here. All the new things, to see, experience, the foods, the people are all so friendly. I live in Campinas, SP. Not much for tourists here, just a normal, fairly large city. Internationla communities must exist here, but I haven't found them yet.

1) My name is Nicolaas and I am Dutch. However, I have lived in Canada, Sweden, UK and of course Holland, besides Brazil.
2) The three most difficult things:
  - Getting them to listen to what you want. I don't know if it is that my portugues is so good they think I am native or bad enough to confuse them. Whenever, I explain something, they do slighly (or completely) different. I have been told it's bacause that I am too colobaritive.  I should be more commandingg and simply tell people what to do, especially with lower educated people.
  - Quality of goods. It is surprising how many simple things (e.g. closet door hinges) are imported because the quality is inferior here. Plastics another rexample. We have things from the UK from 12 years ago that are still good and here I can't make it last a year.
  - Household shopping. Try milk, this week there is and next week there isn't. There is quite an inconsistency in finding basic things in the supermarket.

3) I would tell newcomers, accept invitations, be open to new friends. One of the greatest characteristic of Brazilian people is their openness. They'll invite you to weddings, birthdays, BBQ's at home from the first meeting. However, be carefull, Brazilians getting easily insulted for simple things (e.g. wearing bermuda shorts to an informal but evening dinner!).

4) Except for my colleagues and friends I don't have much to do with the other expatriates. For the moment all I need is for the embassy to be there!

5) My driving has "improved". You need to be much more alert and in control here. Taking more control of simple things, as said earlier, you need to be more on top of what happens and what you need to have done. You need to be more detail minded in everything.

Summary, Brazil is an easy country and culture to adept to but you need to be more aware of what is going around you.

Hi, I’m John back in the 1980-90’s people called me Olly. I'm a well travelled ex-pate from the UK and came to Brazil back in 1996 with my Brazilian wife and son. During my time here I have owned a company, worked for an International company and like many others in those first months taught English. I'm still coming to terms with the amount of bureaucracy and corruption applied by both the private and public sectors. I was also shocked with the legal system here having been on both sides of the table, plaintive and respondent (let’s leave the Brazilian working laws for another day), as they are neither fair nor just, nor the fees that layers charge "It's the O.A.B. tabela" = standard price table so they say. Which nicely leads me to private doctors that also work from a hidden over priced "tabela" R$ 130,00 for half an hour’s consultation, (a good target for the tax man one would think.) You leave the doctor’s office with no results but a list of medical exams that total up to a value as long as a phone number and take forever to get done, what happened to all those old doctors that worked with hands-on? My wife and I joked about the health system here in Ubatuba, we used to say "if you have to go to Santa Casa you are signing your death warrant" we don't joke about it anymore, we lost a friend and I had a close call myself (another story for another day). Get out of town health cover is the solution to that one. "Caiçaras"=  people that are born and live in the beach area, they don't want to work, but want money, they ride their bikes in the middle of the road as if they pay more "IPVA" = road tax than you in your car, beep them and you get a finger and verbal abuse, why? Because they actually believe that roads are for bikes and pedestrians and the pavements are for the dogs to crap on. Lets hold-fire here, I don't want you to think that I'm a negative person that came to Brazil to knock it, when in fact I chose to come here and settle for a range of good reasons, some based on global warming. Brazil has an abundance of advantages compared to other countries.
For those newbie’s or pending newbie’s to Brazil, here are a few tips and tricks: Keep a bank account open in your country of origin at least until you have settled in here, or setup an offshore tax free account in a safe haven (they do exist and some are totally free), you can still have access to your money via an international debit card (works like an International visa card but is not a credit card.) You can also have your salary / pension credited to the account, cheaper than SWIFT and saves one month in compensation if paid by cheque via snail mail.
As mentioned above, budget for a private health plan and read the contract to make sure that you are getting what you think you are paying for, there are clauses with regards to getting exams. Go for a good one like "UNIMED" the last time I looked UNIMED came out cheaper and better than others available in my region. If your company is providing health cover, don’t stop there, go down to the local national health clinic and get yourself registered, why? Because you can get free prescriptions, your national health doctor can provide your prescription on "SUS" = national health service paperwork. Talking about prescriptions don't just accept what your doctor prescribes you, talk to your local pharmacy as they can advise you on generic medicines, why? Big saving on your pocket. Example: I was prescribed three months of "TRAMADOL" = pain killer in capsules of 100mg, cost in the local chemist R$70,00 for a box of 10, the "SUS" pharmacy didn't stock "TRAMADOL" in 100mg capsules but did stock "TRAMOL" = another name for "TRAMADOL" in 50mg capsules, so I went back to the prescribing doctor and asked for "TRAMOL" in dosages of 50mg, a big saving over a period of 18 months as the “TRAMOL” was free in the “SUS” pharmacy. (TRAMOL / TRAMADOL are addictive, they didn’t tell me that) always ask your prescribing doctor about the side effects of any meds they prescribe you.
Shopping centers have all you need in one place, but are expensive and goods are overpriced, the same item can differ as much as 30% from one shop to another, so before you buy look at it, play with it and get to know it, then buy it on the internet on www.mercardolivre.com.br using "mercardo paga" it's a safe way to shop online here in Brazil. Some major supermarkets like "Carrrefour" and "Extra" have gone dot com with some very competitive prices, the saving on a split air conditioning unit, same make same model was R$ 400,00 they also offer free shipping to some areas. Always ask about the guarantee and check the documentation, we had to send a ceiling fan back to the factory in São Paulo, the postage cost more than the value of the fan because of weight. Whatever shop you are in when it comes to paying and they say "qual quer outra coisa" = anything else, always ask for discount and you will get between 5% - 15% Don't feel ashamed either as the price on the price tag has been marked-up by 100% from cost price so you are not begging.
Avoid calling attention to yourself, what people don't need to know about you don't tell them. If you drive an expensive car and wear expensive clothes or carry a camera on your shoulder you are promoting yourself to be robbed / mugged. When you stop at traffic lights make sure you lock the car doors and keep the windows up. I could go on forever here. The tip is staying alert and watch your back / bag. Crime is an international business, stay focused about it, and don’t assume that because you live in a condominium that you are exempt.
Pulling up your roots from one culture and replanting them in a totally different environment has consequences and you have to undergo a rehabilitation period, you are on a very step leaning curve and mistakes can be expensive, we are not just talking about food and shopping here, it gets deeper and involves a lot of situations that we don't encounter every day. Let’s go and open a bank account or get a phone installed, not that simple here. You need access to your social networks to post / vent your feelings, someone is going to reply with guidance. It's important to stay linked to a social network as you encounter people like yourself overcoming the same obstacles as oneself. Why try to recreate the wheel, check out the forums and blogs online and you will find your solutions. Example, do you have a problem in Brazil with your 3G internet connection, only getting 2-3 bars on the modem connection? Search Google with "3G internet problems" and you will find that the rest of the world out there have the same problem, it's not just you. The solution is also out there in the blogs and forums. I was thinking about importing a car the other day, and there was the answer on Gringoes.com giving a link to a Brazilian government site, all chewed up on a plate in English. Do you want to import a car to Brazil? Don't even think about it! By chance I overheard a business man and his assistant in front of "Claro" = phone and internet service provider trying to work out how they could solve there immediate internet issues,  I advised them to go to the food hall, buy a coffee at Bob's and connect to the free WIFI, so simple for those of us that have been here for some time, but totally alien for someone that has just arrived, who the hell is Bob?  Bob's is McDonalds II here in Brazil.
What do you gain in life by packing up the house into a container and shipping it to another country? You become one of a few in this world to actually be in a position to do that, let alone live inside another culture. It can have a down side if you cannot hack it, you start to hate it, then you become unhappy. You have to go with the flow, do what the locals do, eat what the locals eat and yes hang around in the bank lines for half an hour to pay that one bill of R$ 15,99. You don't get Heinz backed beans here on the supermarket shelf’s, but you can get the recipe off the internet and make them in house. The beer is not beer here its lager, so what! Enjoy it while you can, let’s face it it's a lot cheaper than the UK. You have to make some changes in order to adapt, call it an education if you like, you are the one to gain at the end of the day.
How did I end up here? It was premeditated and not the first time that I lived outside my home country. In Brazil you get the Caribbean for half the price without hurricanes and earthquakes. Brazil is up and coming and not lead by war mongers.  I like Brazil, it gets a bit hot and humid here in Ubatuba and there is not many job opportunities on the international front, I currently have one of a few, but I’m always looking for other projects, opportunities and adventures, one has to keep progressing in life and thinking about the future, let’s face it you don’t want to be doing gardens at the age of 65 to put food on the table.

2. I just sat nodding through the experiences of others here. I guess we're all the same
a) My current frustration is with not being able to commit. A Brazilian can make an arrangement with you. They'll always say yes, but come up with an excuse at the last minute or just not arrive. They seem incapable of saying, "Sorry, I can't" or simply, "No, thank you" from the start.
b) I find Brazilians don't try to understand foreigners. It's easier to say, "Não intendo" than to try. Yes, I speak Portuguese with an accent, but that is inevitable.
c) The Brazilian acceptance of bad service or quality frustrates me somewhat. Few will mention it. They'll complain amongst themselves as consumers or citizens, but won't take action (unless it's related to football, as one client pointed out).

3. Advice?
a) Leave your expectations at home. This is a totally different world.
b) When coming here, bring every (and I mean absolutely all) documents relating to you regardless of whether or not you think they'll be important. Someone is bound to ask for one somewhere along the line. Make copious copies of those documents and have each one licked and stamped (authenticated).
c) Before embarking on your Brazilian experience, spend a week inside a sauna. It will prepare you for the climate.

4. I've had little contact with the international community here. In São Paulo, you need to be a high-flying socialite who loves pubs to really be 'in'. For me, personal friendships grown over a cup of coffee are far more valuable.

5. I learned to live with myself and like myself. That does seem strange. Before, I relied a lot on my friends and environment to make up my world and make me happy. Here, I don't like my environment (cities just aren't my thing) and friendships have been harder work than I'm used to. My Brazil time has been a time of great personal growth... of learning where my strengths and weaknesses really are and how to make the best of them. I've also had to learn tolerance

I have a few other observations, etc.
In the US, nobody uses a middle name. Not on local, state or federal documents, IDs, tax papers, nothing. I do not have a document with my full middle name, not even my passport. Only my initial "A".
This begins my journey into aggravation.
I got married here, in Campinas, Dec 31. Went to the cartorio, in December to arrange it, fill out documents, etc. This is where I discovered that the Brazilians have an obsession with COMPLETE names. They wanted to know what the A stands for, I told them Arthur. Ok, everything went well after that, my marriage certificate said my name was Gerard Arthur Mandese.
Fine, that is correct.
Now, I go to the Policia Federal to apply for permanencia, and they compare my marriage cert with my passport.
OOPS
they said I am a different person, they can not accept the papers with my passport having a different name from my wedding certificate! Ouch!
Of course, in my passport records in the USA, I entered my full name, but as the custom, they just used A. Now what?
I had to go to the US consulate in SP, pay R$54 for a letter saying that Gerard A is the same person as Gerard Arthur.
plus the cost of going and coming back,using a day,then getting an official "licked and stamped" copy, then starting the DPF process all over again.
One thing I have learned, is to bring EVERY document I have, with me, no matter what I am trying to acomplish. Passport, ID, copy of my marriage certificate, photos,Carteira de trabalho, CPF, letters, other letters proof of address, everything I have.
Because, the most simple transaction can become a nightmare, if they just want the one thing that I don't have!

I have a question, for all of you. (If you haven't already answered in your first post, but feel free to elaborate)
How did you first end up in Brazil? Was it by chance? Planned? Because you met / fell in love? Work?
For me, it began back when I was about 12 years old (long time ago,lol)I was reading a series of adventure books for boys, about a man and his sons, having adventures in different places in the world, including the amazon. I liked those books, imagining what it would be like to visit.
In 6th grade in school, for a social studies final, everyone had to write a report about a country of our own choice. I chose Brazil.
Back then of course, no internet or electronic information was available. Everything had to be done the old fashioned way, with libraries, books, magazines, newspapers.
I spent a month on this report, writing (by hand), drawing various maps, cutting pictures from magazines and pasting them. (original cut and paste!)
I learned a lot, and for that month I was virtually living in Brazil.
I got an A++ for that report!
Now, fast forward, many years, living in NYC, there is a huge Brazilian community. The biggest street festival of the year is the Brazilian festival in September.
I loved going there, the food, music, everything.
When I became single again, I started exploring the internet, using MSN (Windows Live) messenger, Orkut, meeting many new friends in Brazil. Eventually, I met the woman who is now my wife. I made my first visit to Brazil, in March of 2009, for 2 weeks, and we became engaged. I hed returned at the end of July to live, but had a complication, and returned to NY after 6 weeks. But, I returned to Brazil in October, permanently, got married New Year's eve, and I have been here since.

So, that's my story, in short. I would love to hear more stories!

1-  Nationality: British (resident in Brazil since 1995)

2- 3 most difficult cultural differences: (a) lack of punctuality, (b)corruption (even in its mundane forms amongst general population... i.e. o jeitinho) (c) lack of respect/politness towards people working in lowly service jobs, such as waiters/maids etc.

3- Newcomers should not allow themselves to feel uncomfortable in any situation. Just tell somebody if you're not at ease with a particular behaviour... and say it's a cultural difference, not a value judgment. Having said that, any visitor to any country should be as open-minded and willing to do things differently as possible!

4- What was the importance of the international community for your experience? I actively avoided them for many years... to immerse myself totally in Brazilian language and culture... but now my job involved plenty of contact... então fazer o quê, né?

5- The experience of living in Brazil has added enormously to my personal growth by giving me the 'right to be happy'. I enjoy life and make the most of opportunities that present themselves... possibly easier to do this in Brazil than within the constraints of a more conservative society like the UK.

Well, this is interesting.  Expats in Brasil. I spent months living in, and years working for Brazilians.  I was treated well, but the degree of ignorance about conducting simple basic business is amazing.  The notion that EVERYTHING takes 5 minutes, when Brasilians (I do love them) can DO NOTHING in 5 minutes.  Brasil is a WONDERFUL place to vacation, and I miss it terribly.  What can I say about the food?  Best I have had ANYWHERE in the world.  I Love Churrasco.  As for the women, well, I can say NOTHING here that won't get me thrown off the site permanently.  You men know of what I speak.  One word of advice for newcomers.  NEVER TAKE SIDES IN A DISCUSSION ABOUT SOCCER.  It would be safer for you to insult the Pope.  Brasilians take their soccer with great seriousness, much more so than they take the subject of sex.  They are open and relaxed about this, and it is a great and welcome relief from the insane repression common in the USA and all too much of the world.  For those who have never been, they are missing a great treat.  You all have my ENVY.  WRITING from Los Angeles, CA.

I cannot believe the terrible reviews!!! This was specifically what SATC is supposed to be - enjoyable and humorous, and oh so girlie! It totally captured the spirit of the beloved demonstrate and characters. If you were a fan with the display, how can you not adore this film!? SATC1 motion picture, on the other hand, was type of depressing. This movie was a riot! I LOVED it!! It absolutely was just what the fans ordered!!! Warm guys, cool fashion, glitz, exotic location, true close friends and Aidan! So excellent to view Aidan and also the chemistry among him and Carrie. Everybody in this movie looked Amazing - All those warm males, and all the gorgeous ladies. The gay wedding was hilarious. Can't wait for SATC3!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
